Dear Lincoln School Community,
As a reminder, all schools will also be closed tomorrow, Thursday, November 6th and Friday, November 7th for the NJEA Teachers Convention.
Also, please note that there is no school for students on Monday, November 10th due to Parent/Teacher conferences. In addition, November 17th is a minimum day (1:05 pm dismissal) and November 18th is a delayed opening (10:20 am start time). There is no lunch for students in grades 1-5 on November 17th (the minimum day); however, there is lunch served on Tuesday November 18th (the delayed opening).
Today, students in grades 4 & 5 took part in the Writing portion of the NJSLA-A Field Test. This assessment, which is required of all NJ students in grades 4-11, is being used to assess the quality and validity of assessment items for use in the Spring NJSLA-A test. While we do not receive scores (individually or as a school) based upon student performance, I encourage all of our students to try their very best on the Field Test, as I do for all of their work here at Lincoln School. Students in grades 4 & 5 will take the Reading and Mathematics portions of the Field Test next Wednesday, November 12th.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
By now, you should have arranged a time and date for a conference with your child’s homeroom teacher. Special Area teachers are also offering Conferences on both November 10th and November 17th. Please click here for a Google Doc with more information and links to access the Special Area teachers’ signup calendars. Conferences with Special Area teachers may be done virtually or in person. Please note that several staff members will be located at different schools on the two dates; however, you may attend conferences on either date.
Here are some reminders and guidelines on how you can make the most out of your upcoming conference:
● Parents should enter via the main entrance and sign in at the office. Please be prompt and contact your child’s teacher immediately if you have to reschedule. If you arrive late to a conference it will necessitate a shorter conference as our teachers are on a very tight schedule and don’t want to cut into anyone else’s conference time.
● Prior to the conference, think about any questions you might have and consider emailing the teacher ahead of time so he/she can be prepared to discuss your questions.
● Fall conferences are a time to discuss progress to date and map out goals for what’s ahead. It’s only November, so your child should be approaching grade-level standards and may not have mastered them at this time. Be realistic about their goals, celebrate what your children are doing well, and share a growth mindset for what’s ahead.
● If you have questions that you know will go beyond your allotted time, respectfully request that you have a follow-up phone call.
Keep the lines of communication open with your child(ren)'s teachers and the school throughout the year. It is when we communicate, collaborate, and work together that we see tremendous student growth and progress.
Most importantly, don’t forget to celebrate with your child after the conference. Have a conversation with your child to let them know how proud you are of them and share goals and anything you hope to do to continue supporting their growth as a partner with the school. We look forward to seeing you all at the November conferences!
Please view the “Dress Up” letter for the visit from author Chris Grabenstein, who will be joining us at Lincoln School on Thursday, November 13th.
Finally, Happy Veterans Day and thank you to all of the veterans in the Lincoln School community for your service to our country! I hope you all have a wonderful four-day weekend!
Sincerely,
Patrick Lee
Principal
